Science Interpretation Operations Lead (Part Time, Regular)

The Science Interpretation department brings our exhibits to life by providing informal science interpretation to our guests. To keep everything running smoothly on a day to day basis Science Interpretation relies on a strong team of Interpretive Operations Leads. We are currently searching for the next Part Time Interpretive Operations Lead to provide daily support for Science Interpreters, volunteers and Pacific Science Center’s guest experience by ensuring smooth daily operations and providing excellent customer service.

The ideal candidate must have a passion for science education and peer leadership experience. Experience in a museum setting, coordinating operations/schedules and leading training and/or educational programs are desired. If you are interested, apply today!

Position Start Date: ASAP
Job Status: Part Time, Non Exempt, Regular
Compensation: $13.40/hour

Job Duties:
Science Interpretation: Inspire visitors to take an interest in, appreciate and/or gain a further understanding of science, math and technology by
• Proactively engaging guests in personal, inspiring interactions.
• Learning, implementing and modeling excellent science interpretation.
• Learning all functions of a Science Interpreter II and covering shifts as scheduled by staffing exhibit positions and delivering interpretive programs such as Discovery Carts and 60 Second Science.
• Improving and maintaining one’s science literacy.
• Performs dynamic science demonstrations and/or planetarium shows (if applicable).
Operational Support: Contribute to overall operational functions by
• Creating and overseeing a daily schedule that provides the best possible experience for staff, volunteers and guests.
• Enforcing all policies and procedures.
• Assisting with closing duties; clearing buildings; school group greeting and coordinating evening programming and event staffing as needed.
• Ensuring the safety and security of the building by remaining fluent in the general safety protocols.
Staff and Volunteer Support: Ensure a supportive environment for staff and volunteers on the floor by
• Providing daily support for all staff and volunteers by being a regular, positive and encouraging presence on the floor and responding to individual concerns and requests.
• Checking-out individual staff and volunteers on floor positions and Discovery Carts and providing feedback.
• Learning and leading training workshops, Morning Meeting Mini Trainings and new hire orientations for staff and/or volunteers.
• Preparing educational and training materials as directed.
• Providing breaks for staff and volunteers.
Internal and External Customer Service: Provide for a pleasurable experience for PSC guests and staff by
• Being aware of and responding to individual needs with excellent and compassionate customer service. For example, attend to on-call situations such as lost parties, medical needs, guest complaints, emergencies and special needs.
• Responding to inquiries and effectively communicating with other staff and departments.
• OTHER duties as assigned.

Other Job Considerations:
This job requires the ability to multi-task in stressful situations and work well with other departments to coordinate daily operations. This position must balance guest complaints/issues while maintaining the integrity and mission of Pacific Science Center. It requires a flexible schedule including one weekend day and occasional evening and on-call work.

Education and Experience:
Required
• High School diploma
• Peer leadership experience
Desired
• Bachelors degree in science, education, museum studies or related field
• First Aid/CPR training
• Experience in a museum setting, coordinating operations/schedules, leading training and/or educational programs
