Outreach Education Manager (Full Time, Regular)

Pacific Science Center is committed to driving science education forward in Washington State. At the heart of this are Outreach Education Programs, bringing science education to communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Outreach Education Programs Manager provides vision and direction for Outreach Education for Pacific Science Center.
This position manages existing outreach education programs, new initiatives, budgets, materials, and staff for Science On Wheels, Science After School and grant projects. In addition the Outreach Education Programs Manager works with the Director of Science and Education and the Vice President for Science and Education in developing and implementing new initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess a bachelors degree in Science, Education or related field as well as demonstrated teaching experience at the elementary level and delivery of interactive programs or presentation of formal/informal programs. Supervisory experience and management of grant related projects are also essential. Patience, creativity, and great attention to detail are keys for success in this position. Job Duties:
a) CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Ensures success of Science On Wheels program by
• Working effectively with school staff and parent volunteers in coordination of van presentations
• Interacting appropriately with students and projecting a professional, positive and enthusiastic image of PSC
b) SCIENCE EDUCATION: Inspires a lifelong interest in science, mathematics and technology by
• Working alone or with 1 – 2 coworkers to perform all-school assemblies, teach classroom lessons, effectively display exhibit areas and present after-school programs.
• Working with Outreach Education staff and other colleagues at Pacific Science Center to develop and maintain a vision for Outreach Education for Pacific Science Center
• Remaining current with state and federal education standards as well as current research in informal science education
• Overseeing development and delivery of grant programs
c) EDUCATIONAL PLANNING: Ensures outreach education staff are knowledgeable of program and content areas by
• Overseeing staff hiring, training scheduling
• Modeling appropriate teaching skills and techniques
• Managing curriculum and exhibit development and maintenance for Science On Wheels, Science After School and grant programs
• Responding to staff requests for program changes
• Overseeing communication of program changes to staff in a timely manner
• Overseeing coordination of details and delivery of special projects
d) ASSET MANAGEMENT: Ensures success of Pacific Science Center’s outreach education programs by
• Overseeing ordering, maintaining and inventorying of program equipment and materials for Science On Wheels, Science After School and grant programs
• Supporting maintenance of all Science On Wheels program equipment and materials in the office and on the road
• Delegating tasks to Science On Wheels staff
e) EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT AND SUPERVISION: Ensures success Pacific Science Center’s outreach education staff by
• Performing supervisor responsibilities for 5 - 7 full time staff
• Providing regular feedback for staff through annual evaluations, staff meetings, classroom observations and program participant evaluations
• Providing staff with professional development opportunities, including conferences, workshops and new projects as appropriate and budget allows
• Articulating the department vision priorities to staff and making sure they understand their roles in the broader context of the institution
• Creating a sense of team within the department and as part of the institution as a whole
• Helping coordinate staff hiring and training
• Coordinating with Exhibit Technician
f) OPERATIONAL ADMINISTRATION: Ensures quality of Science On Wheels program by
• Managing the marketing of the various outreach education programs by working with Marketing and Design
• Responding to teacher substitution emergencies
• Making travel arrangements
• Purchasing supplies
• Coordinating with other departments (Facilities, Marketing, Human Resources, Special Events, etc.) and grant partners
• Facilitating meetings for Science On Wheels staff to schedule the teaching calendar
g) PROGRAM OPERATIONS: Supports Director of Science and Education by
• Maintaining timely written and oral communication with staff and partners
• Assisting with grant writing, record keeping and meeting various deadlines for grant projects
• Working with Director of Science and Education and Vice President for Science and Education in developing and implementing new initiatives
• Contributes to the overall vision and goal setting for the Science and Education Division as it fits within the Pacific Science Center as a whole institution
h) FINANCIAL INTEGRITY: Ensures fiscal responsibility of outreach education programs by
• Creating reasonable budgets, overseeing and adhering to budgets
• Approving and tracking expenses
• Creating and maintaining plan for subsidy distribution in conjunction with Registration staff
• Working with Development team to help ensure the ability of the programs to serve underrepresented communities
i) SAFETY: Contributes to the safety of Pacific Science Center staff and program participants by
• Safely driving a full size van to schools in Washington State
• Exercising good judgment, following safety procedures and alerting others of problems when necessary
j) Other duties as assigned including 30 hours/year of alternative service

Other Job Considerations:
• Traveling up to five days at a time, up to one week per month to schools throughout Washington State
• Presenting all-school assemblies and teaching up to six 45 minute lessons in one day
• Working evenings or weekends as scheduled
• Driving a full-size van
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Using handcarts to load and unload lesson materials from a full size van.

Education and Experience:
Required
• Bachelors degree in Science, Education, or related field
• Valid state driver’s license and good driving record
• Teaching at the elementary level, delivery of interactive programs, or presentation of formal/informal programs
• Supervisory experience along with management of grant related projects
• Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and Google email and documents

• Teaching Certificate
• Fluent in Spanish
• Computer skills in PhotoShop, Freehand
